Florida Bar Finds Jack Thompson Guilty of Misconduct

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

Jt660

The always-controversial attorney and outspoken activist Jack Thompson finds himself in hot water today, after a Florida Bar judge has recommended that he be found guilty of 27 separate charges of misconduct.

The vast majority of the charges are in relation to two videogame-related cases that Thompson argued before courts in Alabama and Florida, both of which had to do with Rockstar games Grand Theft Auto and Bully.

GamePolitics reports that Judge Dava Tunis’ recommendations will now pass to the Florida Supreme Court, who will issue the final rulings. Tunis’ complete report is due to the Supremes by September 2, but the next step of the process is a disciplinary hearing to be held before Judge Tunis next month.

Some of the examples of misconduct that Thompson (pictured above in the film Moral Kombat) is charged with include “knowingly making a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal” and “engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation.”

That’s QT Fashion Battles

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

Fashion Battle"It's a walk-off."

That Zoolander quote is an incredibly appropriate way to describe the Fashion Battles in That's QT. About every other month in game time, the anthropomorphic mailbox character will pop up and deliver a challenge to the player from one of the designers. You can either accept or decline (the first option is accept), and after that you are whisked to the event hall.

The contest arena looks like the set of some cheesy game show. The three judges are seated in garish mini-cars, and an announcer with a huge bow-tie introduces your opponent and you to the audience.

Fashion cards for the battleAfter you've accepted the irony that an announcer of a fashion showdown would wear such clothes, five cards appear on the screen, each showing certain clothing items on a model. One of them is randomly chosen, and then you are given the opportunity to dress your model.

I've found the best thing to do is go with what sells. When you touch an article of clothing on the bottom screen, the top screen will display it and also show how many people have purchased it from your shop. Pick items from the highlighted clothing tabs and add them to your model, then click the lower left button.

You're probably wonder, "But what if nothing's selling?" In that case, look at the audience. See if any of them are wearing items you created. If so, have your model wear that.

You will then receive a series of scores. You'll be given a general score, an audience score, scores from the judges and then another series of scores for some random reason. (So many scores flash past, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them is a "showing up" score.)

At the end, the winner will be heralded and given a prize. It is incredibly easy to win if you just go with your best selling pieces, so don't get stressed about it and have fun. I've noticed that, after winning, your shop gets a brief popularity surge as well, so it pays to always look your best.

Steven Spielberg - A Monkey Island Fan?

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

Is Steven Spielberg, arguably one of the best directors of our time, a Monkey Island fan? My magic 8 ball has always told me yes every single time I have asked it, but who can trust a magic 8 ball? The magic 8 ball has also said I would be a billionaire and look at me now. I have to sell monkey parts on the black market just to get by.

But this time, the old magic 8 ball is actually right if this interview that Ron Gilber over at Grumpy Gamer found. Not only is he a fan of Monkey Island, but he’s also a fan of Myst and the Mario series of games.

Not bad, I says!

Spielberg loves to play video games! Why? Because it was something he could do with his kids that was a ton of fun and brought them closer. That’s what I tried to tell my mom when I was playing video games all the time, but she still said it would rot my brain out. If only she had played the video games WITH ME, she would’ve seen the truth!

But not only is Spielberg a game fan, he’s also helping to make video games. Check out Spielberg’s creation!

Pretty cool, if you ask me.

See how Empire: Total War comes to life

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

With all the great console games Sega’s been throwing at us in recent months, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the company also publishes PC games … and good ones at that too.

Speaking of good Sega published PC games, Sega just released this interesting Empire: Total War developer commentary that sheds light in how Creative Assembly motion captures its dueling mode.

Total War is scheduled for a worldwide winter 2008 release.

Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures: A Review of the first 24 hours

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

As a seasoned veteran of the MMoRPG market, I must admit that I have been looking forward to AoC for quite some time now. Having long laid down the land of Azeroth for greener pastures, I yearned for something to fill the void in what has become a stagnant pool of pretenders to WoW’s throne.

Capcom’s statistical explosion: life-to-date series and games sales

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

There are so many little factoids to take from this massive amount of data, we just don’t know where to begin. Capcom has released what seems to be the life-to-date title and series sales figures on all its properties (via Next-Gen). The best-selling series is Resident Evil, with a reported 50 titles and 34.5 million unit sales. Second and third place go to Mega-Man (120 freakin’ titles, 28m sales) and Street Fighter (59 titles, 23m sales), respectively.

The best-selling single game for Capcom has been Street Fighter II, released June 1992 for Super Nintendo / Super Famicom, with 6.3 million units sold. Overall, the company has had 46 titles attain platinum status. The biggest blast-from-the-past reminder for us was the Super Nintendo’s Aladdin at the No. 14 best-selling title with 1.75 million unit sales.

Case: Tafas v. Dudas (USPTO rules)

August 30th, 2008 by hiphper

Today the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia granted Tafas’ and Smithkline Beecham’s Motions for Summary Judgment, effectively holding that the USPTO’s proposed 5/25 and 2+1 rules regarding claims and continuation practice are illegal, and therefore null and void.

Read the opinion here:
GSKSummJudgOPINION.pdf

The case is: Tafas v. Dudas, Docket No. 1:07cv846, as combined with Smithkline Beecham Corporation v. Dudas, Docket No. 1:07cv1008, in the Eastern District of Virginia, before judge Cacheris.

Now we wait to see if there is an appeal…
